Novels and short story collections, picked so an evening with a book never turns into a letdown halfway through.

Bookstore in Almaty
Not a supermarket: a small, carefully chosen selection where the person behind the counter has actually read what they recommend, and will tell you honestly if it is worth it.
New arrivals
A fresh batch reaches the front table every week — from reissues of cult classics to debuts the team is already arguing about while unpacking the boxes.

Our story
Paper Lantern opened in 2018 as a single cabinet in the lobby of a coffee shop on Kurmangazy Street — we sold the books we couldn't stop recommending to friends and kept the earnings in an old tea tin.
Two years later the cabinet outgrew that lobby into its own room, but the selection rule stayed the same: if none of the five people on the team finished a book, it doesn't make the shelf — no matter how loud the name on the cover is.
Today six people work at Paper Lantern, and each owns a territory: someone runs non-fiction, someone else the children's shelf. The front-table display is still changed by the same person who started it all back in 2018.

Our filter
61%of the books publishers and distributors send us never pass the internal read and never make the shelf — if even one of the five people on the team doesn't finish a book, it goes straight back to the supplier's warehouse.

Reviews
I was looking for a book for my grandmother, who reads nonstop but I had no idea what to pick — Aliya asked about the last three books she'd loved and found her Petrosyan's 'The Grey House' in about ten minutes, with a note on why it would work.
Ordered a rare Murakami edition from the book club shelf on Kurmangazy — they quoted 3-5 days, it arrived on day four, and they called right away even though I never asked for a reminder.
My son wouldn't read anything at all until the bookseller figured out he's a dinosaur fan and pulled three non-fiction atlases instead of another fairy tale — now he reads them on his own, no reminders needed.
I went to a Thursday book club meeting expecting everyone to sound overly clever, and instead got a warm discussion with tea and zero spoilers in the first fifteen minutes.
